3 Times Iris West Activated Barry’s Powers With A Touch!
If you haven’t already figured it out already, Iris West (Candice Patton) is Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) lightning rod. She is the one thing that keeps him grounded to our world. She has been shown, on multiple occasions, talking to Barry to help him fully regain his powers to defeat villains (“The Flash Reborn” 4x01) or helping to pull him out of the speed force (“Rupture” 2x20). So, it makes sense that sometimes when they touch, Barry and Iris create electric shocks or she kickstarts his powers. This is one of my favorite things about The Flash. Here are three instances when Iris activated Barry’s powers:
1. Iris Touches Barry’s Chest After He Wakes Up From His Coma: 1x01 “Pilot”
After Barry wakes up from his coma at S.T.A.R. Labs, he races over to CC Jitters to see Iris. Upon seeing him, she runs to hug him jumping into his arms. When they separate she asks if he’s okay, because she saw his heart stop multiple times. “I watched you die, Barry. You kept dying, your heart kept stopping.” Barry then takes her hand and places it over his heart. “It’s still beating.” He says. As she looks up at him, everything starts to move in slow motion as a waitress drops a tray. This is the first time Barry realizes something is different about him. By the time I saw this scene, I had already started shipping Barry and Iris, but this moment solidified my decision.
2. Iris and Barry Kiss: 3x21 “Cause and Effect”
After a bad idea to mess with Barry’s brain went into effect, Barry lost all his memory. Thus, making Barry forget that he’s The Flash. When Barry and Iris go home to their apartment later that day, Barry and Iris share a kiss. After a light peck, Iris and Barry begin to engage in more passionate kiss. Suddenly, Barry moves back and they look at his hand which is vibrating. Barry zooms around the room, realizing that everything else has stopped midair. I think this has to be my favorite power activating moment. The CGI for this scene was so good and the simple fact that this one came from a kiss that Barry and Iris shared made it a magical moment.
3. Iris Delivers a Heartfelt Speech to a Speed Force Affected Barry: 4x01 “The Flash Reborn”
After Barry came out of the speed force, he is taken to S.T.A.R. Labs so that the team can figure out how to get him back to normal. He is in left in the room with Iris, after they woke him up from a medically induced sleep, so that she could talk to him. The scene shows Iris emotionally telling Barry about how she’s been trying so hard to do as he asked. The entire time, Barry is writing symbols on the walls. She moves to the side of him and asks him to come back to her. “Please come back to me. Tell me you’re still my Barry.” He then looks to the side and his entire body begins to vibrate. You can see the lightning streaks in his eyes as he does this. Definitely, a highlight of the season four premiere.
These moments continue to show me how important Iris is to Barry Allen’s storyline. Truly, without her there wouldn’t be The Flash. I love how the writers continue to reiterate this aspect. Can’t wait to see what other ways they choose to show us the power of Iris West!
Bonus: Iris and Barry Literally Create Sparks
4. Iris Grabs Barry’s Hand at the Hospital 1x20: “The Trap”
In a flashback, of Barry’s time in the hospital, we see one of the times Iris went to visit him. It’s after she has accepted to go on a date with Eddie that she decides to come tell Barry what happened. She tells him that she accepted a date from Detective Pretty Boy and that Barry needs to wake up, because those are the sort of things that she does when he’s not there to talk her out of it. Iris reaches in to touch his hand, but before she can grab it a spark of electricity is visibly shown shocking her.
5. Iris Finds Out Barry Is The Flash: 1x20 “The Trap”
At the end of the episode, Iris and Eddie are on a bridge, where Eddie eventually fails at getting a chance to propose to Iris. When the Reverse Flash shows up and knocks Eddie out of the way, the proposal is forgotten. The Flash (aka Barry Allen) rushes in to fight off the Reverse Flash, but he rushes away with Eddie before The Flash can save him. He turns to see Iris on her knees crying, then he tells her that everything is going to be okay. When he rushes away, Iris realizes the spark between the two that happened just like at the hospital.
